Truck explodes in tunnel

A truck exploded and caught fire in a tunnel between Sangju and Gumi, North Gyeongsang Province, Monday, leaving its driver in a critical condition.
According to Korea Express Corporation and police, the 3.5-ton truck was believed to have exploded after hitting the tunnel’s wall and catching fire. The fire was extinguished at 1:30 p.m.
The tunnel was being renovated. The truck driver suffered serious injuries and 18 other drivers who inhaled smoke were sent to a nearby hospital.
“We are investigating the accident but we believe that the driver hit his brakes too quickly after seeing the construction site and lost control,” a police officer said.
