Updated: 2015-11-19-20:08

Tension gripped Samrala town, around thirty kilometers from here, after Ramayana was burnt in a mysterious fire inside Durga Mata Temple on Thursday afternoon. As the word about the burning of holy book spread like wild fire in the area, leaders from political parties and farm organizations forced the closing of shops and business establishment and took out a protest rally demanding action against the culprit.

As per reports, eleven members of Bada Mandir staff including head priest Baba Jaganath were having lunch at around 2.30 pm on Thursday when they saw fire in one of the small temples of Lord Rama and rushed to the spot. Before the fire, they had closed the CCTV cameras installed at various places inside the temple which has many small temples in it’s premises.

Temple staff reportedly told police that they saw the portion of the temple where Ramayana was placed on Aasan (Seat) burnt and managed to stop fire from spreading further. They didn’t rule out the involvement of the lady in the alleged sacrilege.

After the incident, the temple staff sounded police and in the meantime the news about the burning of Holy Book spread like wild fire in the Samrala Town. Leaders from various political parties and farmer organization including Local MLA Amrik Singh of Congress party, National President of Bhartiya Kissan Union Balbir Singh Rajewal, SAD Leader and former MLA Jagjeevan Singh and activists of Shiva Sena later got the shops and business establishments closed after the incident before taking protest rally.

Local MLA Amrik Singh and BKU President Balbir Singh said that the incident is a sacrilege and has been done by mischievous elements to destablise the state. They added that the shocking incident has hurt the sentiments of every community and demanded that the culprits need to be punished.

Police meanwhile is probing the matter but suspects that the fire may be due to short circuit in the temple.

Superintendent of Police (SP) headquarter, Gurdeep Singh told The Times of India by phone that fire officer is probing the cause of fire. He however indicated that the fire may be because of short circuit.

Police officials said that necessary action will be taken only after the report from fire officer.
