SURAT: At least 30 vehicles and 100 drums filled with oil and chemical were gutted as two major fires broke out at a parking site of a building and a chemical unit in the city on Friday. However, there were no casualties in the fire incidents, police said.
An electrical short-circuit in a parking lot of an apartment burnt 29 two-wheelers and a four-wheeler to ashes at Kailashnagar. The fire broke out around 5 am in the electrical meter box of the parking lot of Navsarjan Apartment. “We received the call at 5.26 am and by the time we reached there, the vehicles were reduced to nothing by the fire,” said NK Tiwari, fire officer, Surat Municipal Corporation (SMC).
The second incident of fire occurred at Parth Chemicals located at Pandesara GIDC where over 100 drums of oil and chemical were gutted. The fire started at 3.32 pm and the flames leapt as high as 20 metres.
More than 50 fire officials with the help of 12 fire tenders and two foam tenders brought the fire under control within an hour at the unit.
Pankaj Patel, chief fire officer, said, “The fire could have started either due to a short-circuit or a chemical reaction during a process. The unit was not following any fire safety norms. We will be issuing a notice to the owner.”
The fire department would also be issuing a notice to Navsarjan Apartment management over fire safety issue.
