One person sustained burn injuries when fire erupted on the third floor of a residential building housing a jari unit at Gopipura here on Thursday. Three jari casting machines, 450 ‘firkas’ along with furniture, wiring, doors and windows of the third floor house of Iswar R Jariwala were destroyed in the fire caused by an electrical short-circuit around 10.45am.
Twenty-nine-year-old Jalpesh I Jariwala sustained burn injuries while trying to put out the fire with a fire extinguisher. “We were able to douse the fire after two hours,” a fire brigade officer said.
An officer of Surat Municipal Corporation (SMC) said the unit was running illegally and that its owners will be issued notices. Powerloom and jari units function illegally in many of the residential complexes of Golwad, Sagrampura, Salabatpura, Limbayat, Udhna and Katargam. SMC has not been able to curb the menace of illegal units that function out of residential complexes in the city.
