YKKO manager facing charge after fire
Updated: 2015-11-25
Firefighters respond to a blaze at Junction Square on November 23.
Shoppers at Junction Square say they heard a loud boom, like an explosion, before a fire broke out in a popular restaurant on November 23. Nobody was injured in the blaze, which sent hundreds of people streaming from the shopping centre.
A Yangon Region police spokesperson said the manager of the YKKO restaurant at Junction Square is facing a charge following the fire, which officials attributed to an electrical fault.
The fire erupted around 7:50pm, on the second floor of the Kamaryut township complex, and was extinguished about 30 minutes later.
“I heard a very loud boom, like from an explosion,” said Yankin township resident Ko Lin Lin Soe. “Then there was fire. All the staff and customers in the centre ran out in disarray. I had to take the emergency stairs as people were stuck at the gate.”
Residents who live near the shopping centre confirmed hearing a loud noise before the fire started. Officials though insisted overheated electrical wires in the ceiling of the restaurant were to blame.
Kamaryut police station opened a case against YKKO manager Ko Myat Min Thu, 28, for alleged negligent conduct with respect to fire or combustible matter.
