GEORGE TOWN: A motorist had a close shave with death when his car caught fire after crashing into the back of a garbage truck on Penang Bridge.
The impact saw the Toyota Camry being dragged for about 500m by the lorry before both vehicles came to a halt during the 1.50am accident yesterday.
The man, said to be in 20s, immediately rushed out from his car to check on the condition of the truck driver, who also escaped unhurt.
It was then that the car burst into flames at Km3.3 on the mainland-bound lanes.
Perak Road Fire and Rescue Department officer-in-charge Mohd Yusri Mansor said the bonnet of the car had ‘got stuck’ to the lorry after the crash.
“We rushed to the scene, only to see the front part of the car on fire. It had spread to the driver’s seat.
“The fire was put out within five minutes,” he said, adding that a distress call was received at 1.57am.
Only a day earlier, a 30-year-old salesman was killed at Km0.8 of the bridge when the car he was driving rammed into the back of a parked lorry.
The victim, Khor Chong Meng, from Taman Seri Nibong, Nibong Tebal, was travelling towards the mainland when he was said to have lost control of the Toyota Camry and hit the lorry.
Khor, who was the organising secretary of the Nibong Tebal DAP parliamentary liaison committee, died on the spot.
His head was nearly severed in the incident.
