Updated: 2015-12-01-11:00

Five members of a family have been burnt in a fire caused by a septic tank explosion in their house at Dhaka’s Dakkhinkhan early on Tuesday.

Locals and police later rushed them to the burn unit of Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH), Sub-Inspector Md Zahidul Islam of Dakkhinkhan Police Station said.

The victims are Romana Akter, 30, her daughter Monica, 8, Romana’s brother Imran Hossain, 25, his wife Jannat Hossain, 19, their daughter Tasfia, 2.

“Romana’s condition is critical,” said Assistant Sub-Inspector Sentu Chandra Das of DMCH police camp.
Romana sustained burns on most of her body, Monica and Imran in some parts, and Jannat and Tasfia suffered relatively less, according to police.

Two rooms of the one-storey building near Dakkhinkhan Faydabad Ideal School caught fire after its septic tank exploded around 5am, Fire Service officials said.

On receiving the news, two firefighting units rushed there but locals had doused the fire by then, said Md Mizanur Rahman of the Fire Service Control Room.

“The septic tank exploded because it had no opening for the [methane] gas to exit. The fire spread soon.”
