Updated: 2015-12-02-06:16
Relatives of patients admitted to Uluberia State General Hospital had a nightmarish experience on Tuesday when a fire broke out inside the meter room of the hospital and the staff ran out to save themselves, leaving the hel pless patients behind.
The incident took place only two days after the chief minister announced on Sunday that the Uluberia hospital would be turned into a 300-bed multi-specialty hospital.
Narrating his ordeal, Sheikh Laltu, whose 70-year-old diabetic relative was admitted in the hospital, said, “We heard a loud bang and words went around that a bomb had burst on the ground floor. I saw nurses and other hospital staff running out. Some patients could rush out, but those in critical condition could only watch in helplessness.”
Superintendent Sudip Kanrar said, ” A departmental inquiry has been lodged on how the fire broke out.” No in jury was reported.
