How firemen put out oil tanker blaze within two hours
Updated: 2015-12-12 13:49

A 30-ton mustard oil tank truck exploded on the Northern Sixth Ring Road in Beijing at 1:43 pm Thursday. Flames shot up several meters high into the sky and heavy smoke spread to nearly 10 km.

If the oil continues to leak and the fire is not brought under control, it could result in a widespread traffic paralysis.

The fire emergency center rushes 10 teams of 180 firemen and 37 fire engines to the scene after receiving the call.

In coordination with the firemen, the traffic police started temporary two-way traffic control, allowing vehicles only on the emergency lane.

At 2:02 pm, the first team of 23 firemen and five fire engines arrived at the scene, with two mobile water cannons put into use.

At 2:12 pm, more than 181 tons of water and firemen as well as fire engines arrived, with two air-foam nozzles added to put out the blaze.

The heavy smoke and blaze were sending out heat weaves and we thought the high temperature was going to melt our helmets, said firemen Dong Ning.

At 3:32pm, the fire was finally put out. To prevent the oil tank from reigniting, the firemen re-assembling into three teams continued spraying water and air foam. They also managed to cool the oil tank.

At 4:03 pm, the fire officers began departing from the scene and no casualties and deaths were reported. A total of 267.5-ton water and 13.5-ton foam were reportedly used.
