Updated: 2015-12-07-00:50
A 42-year-old man was charred while three others sustained severe burns when a fire broke out on the second floor of a house at Chandi Mahal in central Delhi on Sunday evening.
The man was identified as Mohammed Rashid, a resident of house number 1737 at Hauz Sui Wala. The fire was reported around 5.30pm when one of the residents of the building raised an alarm. Officials said by the time Rashid could escape, he got trapped and apparently fell unconscious due to smoke. “We are trying to ascertain the cause, but prima facie short circuit seems to be the reason,” the official said.
Five fire tenders were rushed to the spot and the rescue operation started.
“The fire was doused in an hour but one person was charred. Three, including two women, were injured and rushed to Lok Nayak Jai Prakash Narayan Hospital. Rashid’s body was sent for postmortem,” said a senior police official.
Eyewitnesses said the fire gutted all the items inside the building. They also said they heard a blast. The nearby building was evacuated as a precautionary step, a senior fire official said.
