Updated: 2015-12-10-18:29
He died at the burns unit of the Dhaka Medical College and Hospital (DMCH) around 1:15pm, said Inspector Mozanmel Haque of the hospital’s police outpost.
Police said a bachelors’ apartment on the first floor of a building in Narinda was locked from the outside and set on fire
Three persons were rescued from the room and taken to the DMCH burns unit, said Wari Police OC Jehad Hossain.
While ‘Suman’ died, ‘Sakib’, 35, and Shahidul Islam, 27 are still undergoing treatment.
Police were looking for their roommates, identified as ‘Sohag’ and ‘Rajib’.
Both of them were addicts and they used to work at Sumon’s lathe workshop at Dholaikhal, police say.
OC Jehad told bdnews24.com that five rooms of the building with a restaurant on the ground floor were rented out to bachelors.
The residents of the other rooms heard screams around 4am and found smoke billowing from inside but the doors were locked.
They broke the lock and rescued the three victims.
Locals had put out the fire before the firefighters arrived at the spot, said Mahmudul Hasan of the Fire Service Control Room.
Senior Assistant Commissioner (Wari Zone) Nurul Amin of Dhaka Metropolitan Police said, “Sohag and Rajib used to work at Sumon’s workshop. They lived in the same room of the dormitory with Sumon. Both are addicts.”
“Sumon sometimes would rebuke his two employees. They also owed him some money. Sumon thinks this is why they tried to burn him to death,” he added.
