Updated: 2015-12-10-08:22
A fire incident occurred in a city-based hosiery factory, Dhawan Fabrics, at Akash Nagar, near Jalandhar Bypass Road, on Wednesday morning at 5am, when two labourers were working in the factory. As per sources, a short circuit in the factory led to the outbreak of fire, which destroyed goods and machines worth lakhs of rupees. The two labourers rescued themselves by running out of the factory, while at the same time, informing the owner, Rajkumar.
Rajkumar said: “The factory makes clothes, using interlocking machines in which thread is used. Though many workers work here, hardly two to three are there for the night shift. The incident took place around 5am, when one of them intimated me about the occurrence. That very moment, the fire department was informed, which took nearly 12 hours to put it off, leading to goods and machines worth lakhs of rupees being destroyed, but fortunately, the fire did not prove fatal for any labourer.” Fire department officer Bhupinder Singh said around 10 rounds were made by them, using almost 80 trucks of water to put off the flames, which were so high that workers had to break the walls to put off the flames. Though the actual reasons for the fire are not yet known, short circuit could be the main reason,” he added.
Residents of the area said the fire took place at a nearby transformer, after which the power supply got disrupted in the area. After the fire broke out, night shift workers came out of the factory. The fire department deputed 12 tenders that made around 50 rounds to tackle the flames. Sources in the department said the fire teams faced problems getting water from nearby tubewells due to the power cut. Fire station officer KL Kakkar said two fire tenders had been stationed there to tackle any emergency. However, no casualty was reported,” he added.
