Fire at Okhla factory doused after 2 hours

A major fire broke out at a textile factory in southeast Delhi’s Okhla area on Thursday morning. 24 fire tenders were rushed to the spot to douse the fire and no casualties were reported.
The fire broke out around 9.30am. Factory workers said that the fire broke out due to a spark inside a machine, which burnt cloth pieces, and then eventually the fire spread to the whole factory.
Delhi police, fire officials, civil defence personnel and disaster management officials had reached the spot along with CATS ambulance at stand by.
“We got a call around 9.50am and initially 16 tenders were rushed. As the fire grew, reinforcement was sent. There were fabrics and chemicals stored in large quantity which fuelled the fire to grow out of control. We had controlled the blaze by 12.10pm. No deaths or injuries were reported due to the fire,” said Atul Garg, Deputy Director, Delhi Fire Services.
The factory is surrounded by a JJ cluster known as Janta Jivan camp that comprises several jhuggis. The residents said that the magnitude of the fire was so high that it could have charred their residences if the agencies did not act swiftly.
