Day-old ailing infant charred as ambulance catches fire in Thane
Updated: 2015-12-12-00:59

A day-old baby was charred to death, and a doctor and a nurse suffered burn injuries when a cardiac ambulance went up in flames after an oxygen cylinder onboard exploded near Vartak Nagar here at 1.30am on Friday.

The infant, who was brought in with breathing complications, was about to be shifted to a facility in Santacruz when tragedy struck. Fire brigade said preliminary evidence suggests sparks, triggered perhaps when driver Ganesh Shinde turned the ignition keys, ignited flames as soon as the oxygen cylinder was put to use. Within a fraction of a second, the ambulance turned into an inferno.

Dr Bhavandeep Garg and nurse Lisa Chako were seated inside holding the ailing infant. “Dr Garg was wearing gloves and held the infant. The gloves caught fire and he could not hold the newborn any longer. The infant was left behind as the doctor and nurse fled the burning vehicle,” said Deeraj Jain, an eyewitness and a close friend of the infant’s father, Manish Jain. Garg sustained 21% burns and Chacko 7% and received treatment in hospital. The driver had jumped out immediately.

Manish’s wife Kirti had delivered the boy at the Gopinath Rajan hospital in Bhiwandi’s Kalher village on Thursday. As the newborn was underweight and suffered breathing complications, Manish was advised to shift him to Vedant hospital in Vartak Nagar.

The infant was brought to Thane on Thursday evening. After diagnosis the doctors advised that he be taken to a specialty care unit at Surya hospital in Santacruz. They offered their cardiac ambulance and Dr Garg and nurse Chako, it is learnt.

“At around 1.30am, as they were about to leave, the ambulance exploded. The three occupants managed to make a quick exit, but the baby could not be rescued. Another ambulance parked close by was also burnt,” said officials.
