SANDAKAN, Dec 16 (Bernama) — A boat crew member is feared drowned in a fire involving three woooden boats in the waters off Batu Sapi near here yesterday.
Sandakan Maritime Enforcement head, Maritime Capt A.Razak Abdul Rahman said the missing victim was identified as Susulan Abraham, 36, a Filipino while a search and rescue operation to find the victim was being carried out in the incident area.
He said five Filipino boat workers were injured and another five managed to save themselves in the fire.
According to him, three boats were destroyed and sank.
He said investigations found a boat registered as M/L Harma was transferring petrol at the jetty when an explosion suddenly went off as the boat engine was turned on.
Workers on the boat heading to Bongao, Tawi-Tawi in southern Philippines released the spring line to let the boat float away but it spread the fire to another two boats near the jetty, he said here today.
