Efforts Ongoing To Put Out Fire At Plastic Factory

JOHOR BAHARU, Dec 20 (Bernama) — Efforts are still ongoing to put out the fire which has been ravaging the plastic factory in Batu 14 1/2, Sungai Tiram, Ulu Tiram, near here, for the past 15 hours.
Officer-in-charge of Taman Johor Jaya fire and rescue station Tahrin Saat said they had managed to control the blaze from spreading and currently having problems in putting out the fire razing underneath a mountain of husks and plastic waste as plastic materials were highly flammable.
“We have tried using an excavator to dig out the burning husks and plastic waste but to no avail. Right now, we are using water and bubbles to put off the fire razing underneath the plastic waste,” he told Bernama when contacted here this afternoon.
He said the main problem in putting out the fire was, when sprayed with water, the plastic waste would harden and cover the soil surface, preventing the water from reaching the burning husks.
So far, he said the operation which began at 2.30 am had involved 30 firefighters and four engines from Johor Jaya, Kota Tinggi and Johor Baharu.
Meanwhile, Seri Alam police chief ACP Abdul Samad Salleh said the fire broke out in the storeroom at 2 am and was discovered by six workers on duty.
“They tried to put out the fire but to no avail as it had spread quickly to other areas in the factory,” he said in a statement.
Abdul Samad said the factory was manufacturing plastic-based electrical appliances and was owned jointly by investors from Singapore and Japan.
“No casualty was reported and the cause of fire and losses are being investigated,” he said.
