Mystery fire damages eight vehicles
Updated: 2015-12-17-07:14
Eight vehicles, including seven two-wheelers and a three-wheeler tempo, were set ablaze in the wee hours of Wednesday at Shriram Colony in Kothrud.
The vehicle owners doused the flames with the help of other residents of Shriram Colony before the fire brigade reached the spot, close to the Kothrud police station. Some residents claimed that somebody had deliberately set the vehicles on fire. Cops are still clueless about whose handiwork it was.
Shriram Colony resident Satish Bhegde, whose two vehicles were gutted in the fire, claimed that he woke up around 2.30 am on Wednesday hearing sounds identical to small blasts. “When I came out of my house, I saw the two-wheelers parked along the road were burning,” he said.
The fire had engulfed seven motorcycles and a three-wheeler by then. He immediately alerted the Pune fire brigade and started dousing the flames with the help of other residents.
“We first moved away an autorickshaw parked near the motorcycles because it was fitted with a gas kit. Thereafter, we started pouring water on the burning vehicles,” Bhegde said.
He said it took them an hour to completely douse the fire. “The fire brigade reached after sometime as they were busy in dousing a fire in a mall in Kothrud,” Bhegde said.
Shivam Dhanave, whose brand new motorcycle was destroyed in the fire, alleged that someone had deliberately set the vehicles on fire. “I had put a cover on my new motorcycle. But it was completely destroyed,” he said.
Bhegde said such an incident happened for the first time in the colony. “We do not know, who is behind it,” he said.
The Kothrud police have registered an offence against unidentified persons. “We are checking CCTV footage in the area, which may help us trace the suspect,” said an officer of the Kothrud police station.
On June 28 this year, about 92 vehicles were gutted in a fire on Sinhagad Road. A person had deliberately set the vehicles ablaze after cutting their fuel pipes. His activities were recorded on CCTV cameras and was arrested later.
