Updated: 2015-12-21 17:35

PETALING JAYA (The Star/ Asia News Network) – Six cars caught fire at a car park near the Taman Jaya LRT station in Petaling Jaya, sending thick smoke into the air.

Police have denied rumours that the fire was caused by a bomb.

Petaling Jaya OCPD Asst Comm Mohd Zani Che Din said that the incident was an act of arson. “There was no bomb. We are investigating the case,” he said.

Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar also tweeted about the incident.

“Someone set a car ablaze at parking of Lrt Taman Jaya, Pj. There was no bomb explosion. @PDRMsia is investigating a case of mischief by fire,” he said.

Images of the incident, which occurred at about 1pm, went viral on WhatsApp, with rumours of a bomb being set off.

Twitter users also urged others to “stay safe” and “be extra careful”, but tweets that mentioned bombs were later removed from the microblogging site, according to the Malay Mail Online.

The Fire and Rescue Department said they took about half an hour to extinguish the flames and the cause of the fire is still under investigation.

No one was hurt in the incident.
