A man has died after falling sick while trying to rush out of a building in panic following a fire scare in Dhaka’s Motijheel.

An overhead electric wire in front of Haji Mansion caught fire at around 11:45pm on Monday, leading to panic among the occupants of the building, said Motijheel Police Station Assistant Sub-Inspector Mamun Hossain.

The deceased has been identified as Prof SM Shahnewaz Bin Tadib, 65, a physician. He was a former director of the Institute of Child and Mother Health in the city’s Matuail area.

Fire Service control room officer Enayet Hossain told bdnews24.com that four units of the service had put out the flames immediately after reaching the spot.

“As smoke engulfed the building, all the people from the second and third floors tried to rush out. Shahnewaz fell sick while climbing down the stairs from the third floor.”

Doctors at Dhaka Medical College Hospital declared him dead at around 1:15pm after he was taken there, said ASI Hossain.

Shahnewaz’s driver Shipon said he was waiting outside the building for the doctor, who had gone into a bank on the third floor.

Later, after the fire broke out, he saw others carrying an unconscious Shahnewaz out of the building.

Shahnewaz, who hailed from Khulna, left behind his wife Sabina Sultana, who is also a doctor, and a son. The family are residents of the Ramna area in the city.

Shahnewaz retired last year and then went on to work at a paediatric hospital at Mirpur, said Sultana.
After finishing his MBBS from Sir Salimullah Medical College, he worked at different hospitals, including Mitford Hospital in Old Dhaka, she added.

Shahnewaz’s brother-in-law Mirza Tarekul Qader said the family would not ask for an autopsy.
