Two houseboats gutted in Dal Lake fire incident; 12 evacuated

Two houseboats were gutted in a fire incident in an island inside the Dal Lake here today, but 12 tourists and staff staying in them were evacuated, officials said.
Fire erupted, apparently out of short circuit, from one of the houseboats near Nehru Park in the lake at around 7.00 am, which quickly spread to the adjacent houseboat, a CRPF spokesman said.
He said the CRPF personnel posted at a nearby camp rushed to the spot with the personnel from its water wing and rescued the tourists and locals trapped inside.
“The CRPF troops not only prevented the fire from spreading but also rescued 12 tourists and staff from the two houseboats which had caught fire,” the spokesman said.
He said the CRPF personnel also pulled out seven other houseboats from the scene of fire to prevent those from catching the blaze.
The fire, caused by electric short circuit, was put out by fire tenders with the support of CRPF personnel and local residents.
