A five-year-old boy who was locked up in a room by his mother for safety was charred on Monday after a fire broke out in the house following a leak in a LPG cylinder. The mother had locked him up while going out to get his sister from a nearby school at Tughlaqabad in southeast Delhi .

Three more children who were playing outside the house were also injured.

The incident was reported around 1.30pm when Ashu Ali was found calling for help from one of the windows of their house. Locals rushed up to the room and found it locked from outside. One of them, Raju Ali, managed to climb in through a window and reach the room in which the child was stuck.

Raju, along with a police constable, broke open the door but found Ashu charred after he had fallen unconscious due to smoke.

The child was taken to a hospital but he died during treatment. Four fire tenders went to the spot.

Police said that in her statement Najma said she had gone to get her daughter Afina from her school nearby and had locked up Ashu since he would step out of the house to play on the busy road.

Ashu’s father owns an auto repair shop in the area.
The body was sent for an autopsy during which doctors said Ashu was asphyxiated after which he recevied almost 90% burn.

Apparently the fire had broken out of a leak in a cooking gas cylinder and had spread into the other rooms.

Police officers said that a probe had been initiated to find out how the gas cylinder leaked. A case of negligence has been registered against unknown persons.
