Parked auto partially gutted due to fire from mosquito coil

An autorickshaw, which was parked on the roadside in Lingappa Chetti near RS Puram was partially gutted early on Monday morning due to a fire that spread from a mosquito coil. Police said the driver had parked the vehicle on the street on Sunday night.
They said R Shanmugasundaram, 56, of Lingappa Chetti Street, who owns the autorickshaw, parked the vehicle near his house and went to sleep.
He came out of the house the next day around 5am and found a portion of the auto was gutted. Further, he noticed a mosquito coil and a used beedi near the rear seat of the auto. He soon alerted the RS Puram police.
Police said some unidentified person, who used the vehicle in the night had lit a mosquito coil. He also smoked and left the beedi inside the auto.
The fire from the coil and spread in the rear seat, which gutted a portion of the vehicle.
Shanmugasundaram lodged a complaint. The RS Puram police have started the inquiry.
