Car catches fire after crash, man killed
Updated: 2015-12-30-08:23
A 37-year-old man from Kolhapur was burned alive when the car he was driving collided with a tanker and caught fire, on the Sangli-Kolhapur road near Tardal village on Monday night. According to police, the car was equipped with a CNG system and it is suspected that the collision may have caused a short circuit and the gas explosion.
The deceased has been identified as Girish Arjun Khude (37), a resident of Temblaiwadi, Sainath Housing Society, Kolhapur.
According to police, Khude’s car crashed into the diesel tank of a tanker that was waiting in the middle of the Kolhapur-Sangli road to cross the Tardal village bypass road.
Due to a short circuit in the tanker’s wiring, its fuel tank caught fire and this caused the CNG gas to explode. The car was charred within minutes.
Teams from the Ichalkaranji fire brigade and local industrial units reached the spot and brought the fire under control before the tanker was completely burned.
The police have detained the tanker driver, identified as Vashim Bairagdar (a resident of Miraj).
“After crossing the Tardal bypass, Bairagdar drove on to the Kolhapur-Sangli road and as he wanted to go to Sangli, he was waiting in the middle of the road to cross it. But Girish, who was coming to Kolhapur from Sangli side, must have suddenly seen the tanker and might not have been able to control his car, leading to the collision. The car was stuck under the tanker and we had to use crane to remove it,” said an officer from Hatkanangle police station who is investigating the case.
Khude was on his way to Kolhapur from Miraj on the Sangli-Kolhapur road after meeting his relatives.
