Updated: 2015-12-30-08:35

Ahead of PM Narendra Modi’s visit to Noida on Tuesday, tension erupted between two communities over alleged encroachment of land belonging to a graveyard in Rabupura village of Greater Noida. Several vehicles were torched in the incident, following which, SP Sanjay Singh and sub-divisional magistrate S K Mishra reached the scene with police force. The provincial armed constabulary (PAC) also conducted a flag march to maintain calm.

According to sources, people from one community were opposed to a neighbour from the other community constructing shops next to their graveyard, saying the construction had encroached upon land belonging to the graveyard. When tension escalated, protesters pelted stones and damaged half a dozen vehicles. Some shops in the market nearby were set on fire. A mobile recharge shop was damaged. The owner alleged two laptops, and coupons and cash worth Rs 2.5 lakh were looted by protesters, who also set the shop furniture on fire.

SP Sanjay Singh said, “One party was constructing shops after demolishing their homes in the area, but people from the other community opposed the move, saying he had encroached upon graveyard land. We’d earlier intervened and stopped the construction till the matter was settled. On Tuesday, however, when the former resumed work, they were attackedThere were no casualties, though some vehicles were damaged.”

Singh added that heavy police force has been deployed in the area and the police and administration are talking to responsible members of both the communities to diffuse the situation.
