Fire in Parel godown, cell tower damaged

A massive fire broke out in a scrap godown on the MTNL premises adjoining a residential area off Bhatankar Marg in Parel on Tuesday night. A mobile tower and a generator were destroyed in the blaze.
The fire brigade rushed 10 fire engines and eight water tankers, but found it difficult to reach the spot due to the narrow lanes. They managed to control the blaze after a three-hour struggle.
“There are several chawls adjoining the godown premises; it is a very congested area. We finally managed to confine the fire in the godown,” said P S Rahangdale, chief fire officer.
The BMC disaster control room said the fire broke out around 8pm, on the MTNL premises, where the telecommunications service provider keeps its scrap such as fiber optic wires.
The fire brigade evacuated the nearby buildings and managed to confine the fire on the MTNL premises.
Officials said it has been learnt that no one was trapped in the fire, but situation would be clear after the cooling operations.
