1 killed, thousands homeless in New Year fire in Tondo

One person was killed and hundreds of families were left homeless after fire gutted at least 1,000 homes in Tondo, Manila on the first day of 2016.
A report on GMA News’ Balitanghali said fire struck a residential area in Barangay 155, Dagupan Extension in Tondo district at around 2 a.m. Friday.
Authorities identified the fatality as Danilo Francisco, whose burnt body was found in his home’s restroom.
The report said that according to the victim’s family, Francisco helped in efforts to douse the raging fire in their barangay. They believe the victim, who was suffering from a lung ailment, died after having difficulty in breathing while putting out the fire.
The Bureau of Fire Protection said the fire was ignited by a wayward “kwitis.”
The fire reached the general alarm before beong put under control at 9:15 a.m.
The fire bureau said at least 2,000 families were displaced by the fire.
Meanwhile, three incidents of fire also happened in Quezon City early Friday.
Fire hit residential areas in barangays Baesa and Krus na Ligas in Quezon City.
Fire also struck a residential area at the corner of Maguinhawa and Madasalin Streets, also in Quezon City.
An early Friday morning fire also struck another residential area along MacArthur Highway in Dalandanan, Valenzuela City.
