Two youths were charred to death and another sustained severe burns after a fire broke out at a helmet repairing factory in east Delhi’s Jwala Nagar area on Thursday. In another incident, fire broke out at a heater manufacturing factory in west Delhi’s Naraina area, but no casualty was reported.
The victims were identified as Niraj (20) and Deepak (24), and the injured as Jitu (18). Senior fire officials said the trio were workers of the factory. The fire was reported around 4:30pm and initially only two tenders were rushed to the spot, followed by five others.
“Delhi Fire Services men reached the spot immediately and the fire was doused within half-an-hour. Jitu was send to GTB Hospital. Doctors said he has sustained 95% burns and is undergoing treatment. It is suspected that the Niraj and Deepak got trapped inside and fainted due to smoke, after which they got burnt. The bodies have been for postmortem,” said Atul Garg, deputy director, Delhi Fire Services.
The district magistrate, Shahadra, visited the spot and met the families of the victims as well as the injured. “An inquiry has been ordered to see if the factory was being run in an unauthorised manner. Other factories in the area will also be surveyed tomorrow,” said Abhishek Singh, DM Shahadra.
In another incident, reported from west Delhi’s Naraina area around 3pm, a major fire broke out on the third floor of a factory where oil heaters are manufactured. Twenty five fire tenders were rushed to douse the fire.
“Since the factory was located in a congested area, only one tender could enter the lane at a time. Firemen had to climb on the roofs of adjoining buildings to douse the fire. However, no casualty was reported as the labourers had escaped in time. The factory didn’t have NOC from the fire department,” Garg said.
