AGL’s PNG line breached in Pithampur, 2 hurt in fire
Updated: 2016-01-08-18:09

Two people were injured when a PNG pipeline of Awantika Gas Ltd (AGL) was breached during digging work leading to a fire in Pithampur industrial town on Friday.

“The breach took place at around 11.45pm when heavy machinery was deployed by a contractor of Gas Authority of India Ltd (GAIL) was digging in the area,” AGL chief manager VK Shrote told TOI.

Upon receiving information about flames rising high from the pipeline passing below the bridge, police teams rushed to the spot.

Pithampur CSP DK Tiwari said that the traffic on the road was immediately stopped. Fire brigade was summoned and power company officials were advised to cut off the electric supply to the overhead high tension line.

Driver of the heavy machinery, Lakhan Bheel (40), a resident of Kodariya village of Mhow tehsil and the supervisor Gopal Choubey (36), a native of Bihar staying in Dewas, were critically injured. They were rushed to Mhow civil hospital, from where they were referred to MY hospital in Indore. Lakhan, who is more critical, has been admitted to the burn unit at Choithram hospital.

Tiwari said that in the preliminary inquiry, it has come out that Cyclone Energy Pvt Ltd is a maintenance contract firm of GAIL, was doing some work near pipeline under the bridge when the incident occurred.

The earthmoving machine has been seized by the police and investigation is going on to find out the exact reason of the accident and to frame the responsibility.

AGL chief manager Shrote said that the pipeline was made of medium density polyethelene and was damaged when heavy machines got in contact. “The fire was immediately doused by turning of the safety valve,” he said adding attempts were on to repair it.

GAIL official, R Ravi, who rushed to the spot after the incident came to light, confirmed the breach in AGL pipeline and claimed that there was no damage caused to the GAIL pipeline laid adjacently.
