At least one person was charred to death in a fire that engulfed an incense manufacturing unit in Ghaziabad on Saturday. A dozen fire tenders took about three hours to douse the flames that started from the basement of the five-storey building around 5pm.
Police have identified the deceased as Sarfaraz (20), who was employed as a worker in the unit. According to police, Sarfaraz was found in critical condition on the first floor of the building after the flames were doused. He was rushed to a hospital where he succumbed to his burns.
About 18 people, who were trapped in the building during the fire, were evacuated safely by fire department officials.
Later in the evening, the UP state government announced a compensation of Rs 5 lakh for the victim’s family. The chief minister’s office bearing the Twitter handle @CMOfficeUP tweeted: “#UPCM @yadavakhilesh announces an exgratia of Rs5Lakh for the deceased in the Ghaziabad fire accident & full medical support to the others.”
The unit is located near the industrial area outpost under the Link Road police station limits. A senior police officer said the fire was now under control. “The 18 people who were trapped inside the building ran to the terrace to save themselves. Initially, we tried to bring them down with the help of cranes.
However, we gave up this effort very soon because the workers were falling off every time the crane was used. Fire department officials and some cops entered the building and brought the workers down through the staircase after the flames were doused to some degree,” said Asish Srivastava, ASP, Ghaziabad.
Police were investigating the cause of the fire at the time this report was being filed though officials confirmed that it had spread from the basement where raw materials had been stacked. The owner of the manufacturing unit has not yet been traced by Ghaziabad police.
Estimates of monetary losses incurred because of the fire have not yet been worked out.
