Mysterious Fires Leaving Two Families At Wits End
Updated: 2016-01-13 12:00

KUALA TERENGGANU, Jan 13 (Bernama) — Home fires that defy explanation have left two families in Kampung Losong Atap Zin here at their wits end.

Rafeah Sudin, 41, and Nor Aini Kamaruddin, 35, the occupants of the semi-detached houses, said the ncidents started in last Novemeber and the latest was yesterday.

According to Rafeah, a housewife, in the first case, a plates rack behind her house caught fire but she did not suspect anything amiss until two days later when her back wall also caught fire followed by similar incidents elsewhere in the house.

“It happens whether in the day or night and I am at a loss why this is happening.

“The latest incident happened at 6pm yesterday with a Yahama Ego motorcycle parked outside the house going up in smoke,” she told reporters who visited her to get to the bottom of the matter.

Before this, she said in December the same happened to a Modenas Kriss motorcycle and another motorcycle.

She added that she had been renting the house the last eight years and in the last three months there had been about 20 cases of these mysterious fires, mostly occurring around dawn, causing her to suffer losses amounting to more than RM10,000.

“We are not well to do, my husband only works at a workshop. With the mounting losses we probably have no other choice but to move out,” she said.

Nor Aini, a mother of six who lives next door, said she initially thought the fires breaking out at her home were due to wiring problems but when she got it checked, everything was in order.

She said the worst case happened in December when a cupboard caught fire leaving all the clothes inside destroyed.

“At about 11pm we smelt smoke and when we went to investigate found the cupboard in the living room in flames…before that it was the ceiling of one of our children’s rooms,” she said, adding that family was fearful about going to sleep each night as the children were still small.

Both families said they used pails of water to put out the fires whenever they broke out and now the pails were a common feature in both homes.

The two families also said they had tried everything including calling ustaz (Islamic religious scholars) to find a solution to their predicament but to no avail.
