Firefighters injured as flames rage through Yangon market
Updated: 2016-01-11

Firefighters combat a blaze at Mingalar Market in Yangon that broke out on January 9.

Another disastrous fire – the second in six years – has wreaked nearly K4 billion worth of damage at Yangon’s Mingalar Market. More than 1630 shops were destroyed on the night of January 9, with stock in many more shops damaged by water.

Police have charged an electrician and six workers with negligence in causing the fire, which occurred during the installation of sliding doors in a shop owned by U Hla Win.

“Kyaw San Oo, also known as Pho Kyaw, allowed U Aung Bwar and his team to install sliding doors in U Hla Win’s shop, No 451, on January 8. They turned on the electricity at 10pm,” township Police Major Thein Aung said yesterday. “The electrician in charge … and six workers have been charged with careless use of electricity.”

Most of the fire damage occurred on the third and fourth floors, in shops selling pharmaceuticals, food and domestic appliances. But a fire department spokesperson said clothing and other goods in shops on lower floors sustained water damage.

Mingalar Market was severely damaged in May 2010 when an electrical appliance was left on overnight, leading to the destruction of nearly 800 stalls, 47 warehouses, 33 restaurants, and a billiard hall and karaoke lounge, with losses totalling more than K23 billion.
Ma Moe Lay, who owns a fabric shop on the second floor, said, “We don’t know who will help compensate us for our loss. Although 1636 of the more than 4000 shops were lost in the fire, some products have been destroyed by water. We never recovered our losses after the 2010 fire, and now our stock has been destroyed again. I hope the government can help.”

A fire department spokesperson said some firefighters were injured by a falling wall, as 115 fire trucks and 19 Red Cross vehicles were called to the scene. One is still in Yangon Hospital.
