Covered van of ‘Ashol BNP’ torched near BNP’s Naya Paltan headquarters
Updated: 2016-01-17-23:08
A covered van of ‘Ashol BNP’ has been torched near the BNP headquarters at Dhaka’s Naya Paltan.
Supporters of Kamrul Hassan Nasim, the self-proclaimed leader of ‘Ashol BNP’, have accused BNP activists for arson on Sunday afternoon.
Paltan Police Station OC Morshed Alam told bdnews24.com they are investigating the matter.
Last year, Nasim had declared himself as the leader of ‘Ashol BNP’, after ‘rejecting’ Khaleda Zia as the chairperson of the BNP.
The BNP leaders claim Nasim is an ‘agent of the government’.
Nasim’s supporters recently had tried to forcibly enter the BNP office, but failed.
The torched covered van was carrying sound equipment for an ‘Ashol BNP’ ‘programme’ in front of the BNP headquarters on Sunday.
Sound operator Md Tipu, who was in the van, told bdnews24.com: “Some 40-50 supporters of Ashol BNP leader Nasim were supposed to gather in front of the BNP office.”
He said they were coming from Shilpakala Academy when a group of miscreants has attacked the vehicle near Ananda Bhaban Community Centre.
“They torched the van after beating and chasing us away,” Tipu alleged.
Sound equipment and documents of ‘Ashol BNP’ were burnt to ashes in the fire.
Witness Nurul Islam, a fruit vendor, told bdnews24.com that the incident took place all of a sudden. “Some men stormed the vehicle, set it on fire and ran away through a nearby alley before we could understand anything.”
But, police and locals put out the fire.
