Nine persons, mainly kitchen staff, were injured in a major fire that broke out in Grand Bhagwati hotel on SG Highway in Saturday evening.

Three of the injured are reported to be in critical condition. There was major commotion at the hotel and adjacent areas following the fire, in which a fireball escaped and engulfed the kitchen during the busy hours. Most injured include cooks and their hel pers. Officials said that for safety reasons they had to evacuate many patrons of the hotel as well as staff members from the ground floor.

Fire department officials said that while the injured had already been moved to the hospital by the time they reached the spot, they doused the flames still emitting from the gas pipe.

Additional chief fire officer Rajesh Bhatt said that fire broke out in the kitchen on ground floor of Grand Bhagwati due to leakage in the cooking gas pipeline.”We cooled down the entire gas pipeline to avoid any further damage”, said Bhatt.

The victims have been ad mitted in Sterling Hospital The three critically injured persons are in ICU. They inclu de Mahesh Thakor (49) who has suffered 80 percent burns, whi le Ashik Kumar (21) has sustai ned 56 percent burns. Doctors said all three persons who sus tained severe burns are critica and their condition is being clo sely monitored. The other inju red include Naimish Pandya (35), Shiv Kumar Mala (20), Bo lu Gurjar (29), Krishikesh Umar (21), Premaram Meena (40), Ram Roop (50), and Sidd hant Survare (30).
