Updated: 2016-01-19 12:00
LUMUT, Jan 19 (Bernama) — The fire which broke out on a Royal Malaysian Navy ship, which was being repaired at a shipyard in Kampung Acheh here, yesterday, is believed to have been caused by a short circuit.
Navy chief Admiral Datuk Seri Ahmad Kamarulzaman Ahmad Badaruddin, however, said they were still awaiting a full report of the investigation into the cause of the fire from the Malaysian Fire and Rescue Department.
“The fire broke out on the engine’s canvas cover. There were no casualties and no damage to any equipment or the ship’s engine.
“The ship has not been handed over to the navy and is under the responsibility of the shipyard operator, Grade One Marine Services Sdn Bhd,” he told Bernama here today.
Meanwhile, Sitiawan Fire and Rescue Station chief, Mohd Zaki Zainol said the cause of the fire and the losses incurred are expected to be known within two weeks.
He said a team rushed to the scene after receiving an emergency call about 9.59am yesterday and took 20 minutes to control the fire from spreading to the rest of the ship.
