A devastating fire broke out at Daying Ering Memorial Government Higher Secondary School in East Siang district in the small hours on Sunday reducing seven rooms to ashes.
All important documents of the school and its students were destroyed, said school authorities. The internal exams of Classes-IX and XI and the boards for Classes-X and XII were scheduled to be held from February 1 and March 1 respectively. All the valid exam-related documents are destroyed and the school authorities are concerned over it.
It is one of the oldest schools in the state, established in 1972, a source said here on Monday. The chamber of the vice-principal, two classrooms, teachers’ room, the CBSE cell, eight sets of computers were gutted.
The cause of fire has not been ascertained yet, but a case under Section 436 of IPC has been registered to book the perpetrators (if any), said Pasighat police station OC N Riba.
Section 436, IPC, deals with acts of mischief by fire or explosive substance with the intent to destroy house. East Siang DC Isha Khosla has asked the district administration to provide the necessary assistance to the school authorities so that the academic classes are not hampered. The school has been asked to make alternative arrangements to hold classes in the auditorium, she said.
Assessment of the damage is being carried out and a report on this will be submitted to the state government to give it a final estimate so that it can provide funds accordingly.
