Fire breaks out in colliery

Fire broke out in an open cast coal mine in the Kuju collieries of Central Coal Fields Limited (CCL) in Ramgarh district on Tuesday.
The fire, which was detected during overburden removal work on Tuesday morning, has prompted CCL authorities to stop work and move miners and officers to safety.
A team from director general mines safety (DGMS), headed by deputy director Deo Kumar rushed to the site later in the day. The busy highway nearby was previously damaged by an underground fire, which originated in one of the mines in 1988.
AK Chaubey, general manager of Kuju area said, “We have stopped work of removal of over- burden for safety. Cause of fire is not yet known. All miners and officers at the time are safe,” he added.
The DGMS has not ruled out the possibility of toxic gas emissions from the fire.
In Ranchi, CCL deputy chief safety officer Shailendra Singh said all precautions are being taken and efforts are underway to subdue the fire. The Ramgarh district administration has rushed fire engines for help.
