Four injured in parking lot fire
Updated: 2016-01-21-00:26

Four people were injured, one of them severely, after a fire broke out at a multi-level parking lot under construction at Jangpura in southeast Delhi on Wednesday morning.

The injured were rushed to Safdarjung hospital. Officials said Jai Prakash, 34, who belongs to Uttar Pradesh, sustained 80% burns and was admitted to the ICU. Others were discharged shortly. They were identified as Ram Prasad Rai (45), Ram Prakash (20) and Anil Chhotu (35), all from Bihar.

The incident occurred around 9.30am when the labourers were on duty. “We got a call at 9.44am about a blast in the building. Eight fire tenders were rushed to the spot and the fire was doused within 15 minutes. Four people were reported to be trapped inside the building and were rescued by the fire fighters. Prima facie, the cause of the fire seems to be short circuit but the matter is under probe,” said Atul Garg, deputy director, Delhi Fire Services.

Fire officials said some drums with diesel were stored inside the building which might have caused the explosion. Garg said a lot of electrical items, too, were stashed which led to dense smoke. “The three men rescued had fallen unconscious due to suffocation,” the official said.

The parking lot is being constructed by Pratibha Construction Limited. The contract was given by the South Delhi Municipal Corporation. The company said the construction of the complex, which was to be completed by 2011, has dragged on for five years due to delay in environment clearances.

The project in charge, Avtar Singh, from Pratibha said, “The 35-year-old man, who received serious injuries, is insured and we have also extended medical support to the worker. There were diesel storage drums in the basement and The fire would have broken out while drawing diesel out of the drums with the help of a pump.”

South Corporation standing committee chairman, Radhey Shyam Sharma, said, “If we find any negligence on the part of the contractor, we will file an FIR.”
