Three suffer burns after LPG cylinder leak triggers fire
Updated: 2016-01-21-12:00

Instead of waking up to a hangover after a booze session, three friends landed at Kilpauk Medical College and Hospital on Wednesday in critical condition after an LPG cylinder blast triggered a fire at a Villivakkam apartment.

Police said Nagaraj, 27, of Bharati Nagar in Villivakkam and a private conservancy worker, had invited colleagues Babu, 25, of Thirumullaivoyal and Srinivasan, 51, of Thiruverkadu, home for a party . His wife Yamuna had gone home to Nellore in Andhra Pradesh where she delivered the couple’s second child on Tuesday.

An elated Nagaraj wanted to celebrate. After several drinks, the trio dozed off in a room next to the kitchen in the small flat. “They might have also cooked something but as they were drunk, they must have forgotten to turn the gas stove off,” a police officer said.

As they slept, the gas spread. There was no ventilation as they had closed the windows to prevent mosquitoes, police said.

In the middle of the night, Srinivasan woke up for a smoke and as soon as he lit the cigarette, it ignited the LPG that had spread through the flat. A few of Nagaraj’s neighbours heard a loud blast and rushed there. They found the door had broken and the three men with burns.

They rushed the men to Kilpauk Medical College and Hospital where doctors said their condition is serious. Sources at the hospital said Babu and Srinivasan suffered 25% and 33% burns, and Nagaraj suffered 61% burns. Besides, all three men had inhaled LPG and their respiratory tracts had been affected, sources said. The Villivakkam police station registered a case and is investigating.
