Updated: 2016-01-25-14:42
A fire broke out at the warehouse of Deccan Chemicals at Rajavaram village in Payakaraopeta mandal of Visakhapatnam district on Sunday evening. People from the neighbouring villages panicked as dense chemicals fumes caused due to the burning of chemicals in the form of powder and solids, which were stored in the warehouse. According to police, no one was injured in the mishap. Material stored at the warehouse was destroyed in the fire.
Factories joint chief inspector Chandrasekar Varma said, “Nobody was injured in the fire. The warehouse is located at a little distance away from the factory. There is no scope of fire spreading to other areas.”
He said the fire was reported at around 5.45 pm following which fire services personnel rushed to the spot. Five fire tenders were pressed into action. Yelamanchili inspector Venkat Rao said preliminary investigation revealed that electric short circuit had caused the fire. He said that people from the neighbouring villages ran from the villages out of fear after seeing the huge flames from the warehouse. He said that around 50 per cent of the fire has been taken under control and fire tenders are working to douse the fire.
However, CPM district secretary K Lokanadham said nearly six villages with around 15000 people are affected due to the fire at the warehouse. He said that the company is going for expansion in the month of February and people are fearing that if such an accident happens after that, then more people will be affected.
He said that the company is expected to go for public hearing for the expansion of its plant in the coming month of February. He said that chemical fumes are causing a major problem to the villagers in the vicinity of the plant.
Two people had died and 20 others were injured at the same Deccan Chemicals plant due to a blast in the reactor in April 2014.
He alleged that even after such a major accident, the company had failed to take safety measures, especially considering that the fact that it deals with various inflammable chemicals.
Meanwhile, a fire engulfed the Konaseema Oil shop at Vuda Complex in Seethammadhara on early hours of Sunday.
