NO CASUALTIES were reported in a blaze that destroyed four houses and damaged another in Kampong Tamoi Ujong, yesterday afternoon.
Around 30 occupants managed to escape, and salvage some of their belongings.
In an interview, Tarif bin Haji Asgar, the Village Head of Kampong Tamoi Tengah and Tamoi Ujong in Mukim Tamoi, said that he was at home when the fire broke out between 4.30pm and 5pm. He said that he was alerted by his son in-law, who had just returned from work.
“I phoned the Fire and Rescue Department, while the young people of Kampong Tamoi rushed to the scene to evacuate the occupants and try to put out the fire while waiting for the Fire and Rescue Department,” the village head said.
“These young people had already been trained by the Fire and Rescue Department on how to cope with fire emergencies,” he said.
He has contacted the Brunei-Muara District Office and the Community Development Department (JAPEM), which have already taken the step of interviewing the families who lost their homes in the blaze.
“In the meantime, they are moving in with relatives, who are also living in Kampong Tamoi. I would like to call upon the relevant authorities to help ease the burden of these families,” he said.
