Three killed in construction site accident
Updated: 2016-01-26

Rescue workers exhume bodies of construction workers killed in a landslide yesterday.

The accident occurred while the workers were digging up dirt to use on the retaining wall around 9:45am at Withuddhayone Dhamma Beikman Pakokku monastery in Mayangone township, according to local resident Ko Myo Oo.

The bodies of three of the workers, including a child labourer, were recovered by the fire brigade, according to the police report.

“We know there are six people total, but we found only three. We are still looking for the other three,” said a police officer from Mayangone police station. “The bodies of the three workers were found as the rescue team cleared the landslide pile carefully with a backhoe.”

The bodies have yet to be identified, but were transported to North Okkalapa Hospital with a vehicle provided by the Free Funeral Service.

A similar accident occurred in Tarmwe township on January 16 after a landslide at a construction site behind a tea shop. No one died.

Construction site accidents are common around the country, and labour rights groups cite outdated legislation as leaving workers vulnerable to poor safety practices. Current rules on safe workplaces largely hinge on the 1951 Factory Act. The ministries of labour and of construction have been working on a draft “Health andSafety in the Workplace” law since 2012, but it has not yet been put to parliament.
