67 shops razed in Pasighat fire
Updated: 2016-01-31-09:03

At least 67 shops were destroyed in a fire in the main market of Pasighat in Arunachal Pradesh’s East Siang district on Thursday night. A nearby fruit and vegetable market was also partially damaged.

No casualty was reported, said a source. The reason behind the inferno was yet to be ascertained, the source added.

Deputy commissioner Isha Khosla, SP R S Chauhan, LS MP Ninong Ering and the district disaster management officer (DDMO) visited the spot and advised locals, who had gathered near the market, to keep a safe distance from the mishap site.

Additional deputy commissioner Deepak Shinde, zilla parishad chairman Kaling Dai, Pashigat Municipal Council’s chief councillor Denong Tamuk and all ward councillors were also present.

Two fire tenders, a tanker of PH Constructions and a JCV were pressed into action while a fire tender from nearby Jonai, Assam, was also called in to douse the blaze.

Though 67 shops were gutted, the fearless firemen fought desperately to stop the spreading of the blaze and brought the situation under control in a couple of hours.

The district administration on Friday handed over Rs3,800 each to all victims as immediate relief. Khosla has appealed to the people to remain alert and be cautious as fire incidents occur frequently in Pasighat.

Local MLA Kaling Moyong has expressed shock over the incident and assured of taking up the compensation issue personally with the advisers to the governor soon.

Prominent leader Bosiram Siram also visited the spot and shared his advices, an official report said.
