Fire at book fair, Hindu hostel

Bitter memories of 1997 flashed in the minds of book lovers and publishers when a fire broke out at the book fair on Saturday morning. But the flames were doused within minutes, before it could spread to any book stall.
According to fire officials, the blaze broke out at a coffee shop at the Milan Mela ground around 9.30am. even last time, the devastating blaze that destroyed thousands of books and stalls started from a coffee shop. Saturday’s fire lasted for merely five minutes but within that time, it completely gutted the coffee stall and partially damaged the one next to it. Four fire engines were used to put off the flames. The police suspect a short-circuit was the cause. “It was a small fire that was put out quickly. We have brought down the number of food stalls from 30 last year to 27,” said Tridib Chattopadhay, secretary of the Publishers and Booksellers Guild.
Hours later, another fire broke out at Hindu Hostel opposite Presidency University. The incident was reported around 1.45pm. “The fire was detected in a garbage piled up near the kitchen of the hostel. Within minutes, the smoke spread to the first floor. Five fire engines doused the flames. No one was injured,” an official said.
