BIRGUNJ: Property worth Rs 5 million was gutted when fire engulfed 13 houses in Langadi, Parsa, on Friday. The fire had started from the kitchen of Samashuddhin Dewan’s house at about 11.00 am before it spread to 12 other houses in Langadi, Bakhari, Sub-inspector Ram Bahadur Yadav said. Fire brigades with the help of locals and security personnel doused the fire two hours later. Scores of people have been rendered homeless due to the fire. “We have lost everything in the fire save the clothes we are putting on,” bemoaned a fire victim.

Hospital sans docs

TIKAPUR: Tikapur Hospital in Kalali district has been running without doctors for months. Of the three doctors appointed by the government five years ago, only one doctor is working at the hospital at present. “Since he has also gone to the Capital, there is not a single doctor on duty here,” lamented a hospital staff on Friday. Meanwhile, another doctor, Dr Arjun Prasad Shrestha, who was recently appointed at the hospital, has been transferred to the Nawalparasi District Hospital, said a hospital source. About 200 patients from as far as Surkhet, Doti and other neighbouring districts visit the health facility daily.

Kin receives Basnet’s body

GAIGHAT: Kin of Pramod Basnet, 33, of Bokshe, who had died allegedly due to police beating, received his body on Friday. Basnet, who was arrested for consuming alcohol in public on Wednesday, had died while he was in police custody of District Police Office, Udayapur, on Thursday. Family members had received his body following an agreement with the police officials. As per the agreement, local authorities will take initiatives to set up a probe committee to investigate into the death, get the government to provide relief to the concerned family and secure a job for the deceased’s wife on a contract basis at some government office in the district. Following the agreement, Basnet’s kin carried out his final rites after a post-mortem.
