Four workers injured in fire at Titagarh sawmill
Updated: 2016-02-01-00:30
At least four workers suffered severe burns when the sawmill they worked in caught fire around an hour after Saturday midnight. Six fire engines took nearly three hours to douse the flames at the establishment at Titagarh in North 24-Parganas.
All the four injured were taken to Barrackpore B N Bose Hospital from where, two of them were shifted to RG Kar hospital after their condition deteriorated.
The workers were sleeping in the godown of the mill, situated off Kalyani Expressway at Chalk Kanthalia, when the devastating fire broke out around 1.30am on Sunday. The police suspect a short-circuit strated the blaze though the exact cause is yet to be confirmed.
Witnessed said, within minutes, the flames engulfed the entire mill, including the godown. “We rushed to the premises and dragged the four workers, who were trapped inside the godown, out but they had already suffered burns,” said Dilip Chowdhury, a resident of the area. The residents initially tried to douse the flame themselves and then, they alerted the fire brigade as well as the Titagarh police station.
According to the residents, it was more than an hour before the fire engines arrived and by then, the entire mill was gutted. Fire officials, however, pointed out that the blaze could not be contained as the mill did not have any fire-safety mechanism in place.
“We are investigating if the sawmill was run illegally. The owner, who has been detained, is being questioned,” a senior officer at the Barrackpore commissionerate said.
Residents also staged a demonstration, demanding immediate compensation for the injured.
