Fire at New Secretariat, files gutted
Updated: 2016-02-02-22:49

A fire broke out on Tuesday morning in the health department office located on the third floor of the New Secretariat building on Bailey Road under the Secretariat police station area. While no injury or loss of life was reported, some important files were gutted.

The building was immediately evacuated and six fire tenders were rushed to the spot. It took around 25 minutes to douse the flame. Patna City SP (Central) Chandan Kushwaha said, “While nobody was injured, the exact cause of the incident is yet to be confirmed. Prima facie it appears that the fire took place due to short circuit.”

Several important health department documents were stored on the third floor of the building. While files related to the recruitment of paramedical staff, including ANMs and GNMs, were gutted, the drug scam files were safe as the fire could not spread to that part of the building where they were stored, said health department officials. An inquiry committee, including officials of building construction, health and fire departments, has been set up to investigate the matter.

Health department principal secretary R K Mahajan said, “The fire has been successfully doused and the officials concerned are verifying the details of the destroyed files.” Chief minister (CM) Nitish Kumar and senior ministers, including health minister Tej Pratap Yadav, enquired about the incident, sources in the health department said.
