IPOH, Feb 11 (Bernama) — Another locomotive fire incident has happened, this time involving the Ekspres Rakyat train which was on its way from Johor Baharu to Butterworth when its engine caught fire while passing Kampung Kuala Tanjung, near Kamunting, about 80 kilometres from here at around 8pm Thursday.
However, the more than 300 passengers and crew on board were unhurt in the incident.
Kamunting Fire and Rescue chief, Mohd Taufik Abd Sattar told Bernama they received a distress call at 8.43pm and that firemen brought the fire under control in less than 30 minutes but more than 30 per cent of the locomotive was destroyed.
Meanwhile, KTMB senior marketing manager Mohd Noordin Kimi, when contacted, said the passengers continued their journey on the same train after a replacement locomotive was brought in.
“The alertness of the KTMB crew on board to disengage the locomotive from the nine-coach train saved the day,” he said.
Two days ago, a fire broke out on the locomotive of another Express Rakyat train serving the same route, about a kilometre from the Keretapi Tanah Melayu Berhad (KTMB) Sungai Gadut Station near Seremban, at 2.35pm. The train driver sustained mild injuries on the fingers while the 309 passengers were unhurt.
