Fire at Chalai Market spreads scare
Updated: 2016-02-08-07:24
Panic spread at Chalai market region in the heart of the city following a fire breakout at the godown of prominent cracker trader in the market. It was the godown of V S Traders at Marakada Road in Chalai Market that caught fire.
The Fire and Rescue Personnel who sprang to action contained the fire before it spread to other buildings in the market that is crammed with decades old buildings.
According to Fire and Rescue sources, the fire broke out around 10.50 pm. As many as 10 units of fire tenders were pressed into service. This includes four units from Rajaji Nagar station and two each from Chackai, Vizhinjam and Neyyatinkara stations. It took around 45 minutes for the fire fighters to douse the fire successfully.
”There were very less stock in the godown and most of it were fancy crackers and explosives with low intensity. Hence the fire did not cause any big explosion”, said Division Fire Officer Noushad. The godown was sealed down over a year ago as part of attachment by a bank for allegedly defaulting in repaying a loan. Hence there was very less stock inside the godown, Noushad said.
