Narrow escape for passengers as govt bus catches fire

A sudden fire in one of the front tyres of a government bus triggered panic among the people near Perambalur in the late hours of Friday. The passengers escaped without any injuries as the alerted driver stopped the bus in time.
The TNSTC bus plying from Trichy to Tindivanam had to cut short its trip with 54 passengers on board the bus around 10 pm on Friday after a fire emanated from the axle of the bus. Driver Sankar noticed the smoke and brought the vehicle to an immediate halt at Naranamangalam in Perambalur on the Trichy-Chennai national highway.
The passengers too had noticed the smoke and as soon as the driver stopped the bus they rushed out. Fire and rescue service personnel soon arrived and brought the fire under control. Highway patrol teams too rushed to the spot.
A major accident was averted because of the presence of mind of the driver who stopped the bus suddenly.
The officials arranged a spare bus in which the stranded passengers resumed their journey later.
