Fire hits garbage heap near Batangas Port
Updated: 2016-02-12-08:36
A fire of yet undetermined origin consumed tons of garbage at a dump-site near the Batangas Port on Thursday morning.
GMA News’ “Unanng Balita” said Friday that no one was reported hurt in the 45-minute fire that also destroyed P30,000 in property.
The fire spread quickly as it fed on highly flammable materials including plastic, styrofoam, and rubber, the report added.
A Bureau of Fire Protection-Batangas City report indicated that the fire began at around 11:29 a.m. at the garbage site at the left side of the Batangas Container yard.
Firefighters had a hard time putting the fire out because of the strong winds and stench of the burning materials, the report said.
Investigators believed the fire started from the a lighted matchstick or lighter accidentally thrown into the heap of garbage.
An investigation into the cause of the fire is ongoing.
